SpaceX, the company founded by Elon Musk to revolutionize space technology, has successfully tested its direct-to-cell service with its Starlink satellites.
The company posted a message on its social media platform x, saying the post was sent via a SpaceX Direct to Cell satellite into space.
Direct to Cell is a new feature that allows Starlink satellites to communicate directly with mobile phones, without the need for infrastructure.
This means users can access voice, text, and data services anywhere in the world, even in remote locations or disaster areas, with their LTE phones.
SpaceX launched the first six Starlink satellites with Direct to Cell capability on January 2, 2024, as part of its Coverage Above and Beyond project, which aims to provide coverage to its customers.
The company plans to launch more satellites with this feature in the coming years, and eventually use them to power its Starship rocket, the largest in history.
