Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, is recovering in Germany after undergoing a successful lung surgery.
Ssegirinya had been diagnosed with lung tumors that could not be treated in Uganda, according to his personal assistant Alex Luswa Luwemba.
Ssegirinya left Uganda on August 1, 2023, with permission from the Masaka High Court, which had previously retained his passport over charges of terrorism and murder. He first went to Nairobi Hospital for further examinations before proceeding to Germany for comprehensive treatment.
Ssegirinya was initially admitted to UMC Hospital in Amsterdam, where he received medical care for two weeks. He was then transferred to a hospital in Germany, where he underwent a lung surgery on August 14, 2023. The surgery was successful and Ssegirinya is now in stable condition.
Ssegirinya’s family and friends have been visiting him in Germany and expressing their support and prayers for his recovery. His brother, who accompanied him on the trip, said that Ssegirinya is hopeful and optimistic about his health. He also thanked the Parliament of Uganda for arranging and funding his medical trip.
Ssegirinya is a vocal opposition member of the National Unity Platform (NUP) political party and a supporter of former presidential candidate Bobi Wine.
He has been arrested several times for his political activism and protests against the government. He is currently wanted by Buganda Road Court over fresh charges of inciting violence.
Ssegirinya said that he is looking forward to returning to Uganda and serving his people of Kawempe with all he has, just like before. He also urged his supporters to remain peaceful and united in the struggle for democracy and justice.
