Ugandan singer Jose Chameleone, also known as Joseph Mayanja, has been discharged from a hospital in Minneapolis, US, where he had been admitted for stomach complications.

He announced the news on his Instagram account on Friday, July 9, 2023.

Chameleone had been hospitalized on Monday, July 5, 2023, after complaining of severe abdominal pain. His father, Gerald Mayanja, confirmed that his son had developed complications from a previous surgery he had in 2008, when he was involved in a car accident in Tanzania.

“Chameleone has been unwell for the past few months. The condition worsened when he moved to America, and now he is seriously ill, confined to his sickbed.

He is undergoing treatment for complications in his stomach,” Mayanja told Bukedde TV.

Mayanja also blamed his son’s illness on some Ugandans who wished him ill and wanted him to fail.

He said his family had faced many challenges and asked for prayers and goodwill from the public.

Chameleone’s brother, Humphrey Mayanja, who lives in the US, was also hospitalized with a similar condition.

He also thanked his fans and friends for their support and prayers. He said he was recovering well and hoped to be discharged soon.

Chameleone is one of the most popular musicians in Uganda and across Africa. He started his career in 1996 as a DJ at the Missouri nightclub in Kampala, before joining the Ogopa Deejays in Kenya, where he released his first single, “Bageya”, featuring Redsan.

He has since released over 13 albums and numerous hit songs, such as “Valu Valu”, “Jamila”, “Shida za Dunia”, “Bayuda”, “Tubonge”, “Wale Wale” and “Badilisha”. He sings in Luganda, English and Swahili, and blends various musical genres, such as R&B, hip hop, dancehall, zouk and afrobeats.
