Airtel Uganda and MTN Uganda have introduced virtual cards to enhance digital commerce and financial inclusion. These cards allow users to make secure online payments without needing a physical card or bank account. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to activate these virtual cards using USSD codes and mobile apps.
Airtel Money Virtual Mastercard
Activation via USSD:
- Dial *185# on your Airtel Uganda number.
- Select “Financial Services” (Option 7).
- Choose “Airtel Money Mastercard” (Option 9).
- Select “Get a Card” (Option 1).
- Enter your Airtel Money PIN to confirm. No card generation fee applies.
- Wait for an SMS with a link to your card details.
- Click the link, enter the one-time password (OTP) sent to your phone, and view your card details (16-digit number, expiry date, and CVV).

Activation via MyAirtel App:
- Download the MyAirtel App from the Play Store or App Store if you don’t already have it.
- Open the app and navigate to the “Airtel Money” section.
- Enter your Airtel Money PIN to access the dashboard.
- Tap the Mastercard logo next to your wallet balance.
- Re-enter your PIN and select “Proceed” to create the card.
- View your card details in the app and save them securely.
MTN MoMo Virtual Mastercard
Activation via USSD:
- Dial *165# on your MTN Uganda number.
- Select “Financial Services” from the menu.
- Choose “MoMo Card.”
- Select “Create Virtual Mastercard.”
- Confirm your details and ensure your MoMo wallet has sufficient funds.
- Receive your card details (16-digit number, expiry date, and CVV) via SMS34.
Activation via MyMTN App:
- Download the MyMTN App from the Play Store or App Store if you don’t already have it.
- Open the app and log in to your MTN MoMo account.
- Navigate to the “MoMo Card” section.
- Select “Create Virtual Mastercard.”
- Confirm your details and proceed.
- View your card details in the app and save them securely4.
